How Much RAM and Storage Do You Really Need? A Laptop & Desktop Upgrade Guide

Stop guessing — right-size your RAM and storage for the work you actually do.

Buying more than you need wastes money; buying too little wastes time. Here's how to right-size RAM and storage.

RAM by workload

  • 8GB: Light web, email and documents only. Increasingly tight.
  • 16GB: The sweet spot for most professionals — comfortable multitasking. Recommended baseline.
  • 32GB: Heavy multitasking, virtual machines, large spreadsheets, photo/video editing.
  • 64GB+: 3D, heavy video, engineering and data work.

Storage by workload

  • 512GB SSD: Fine for most office users.
  • 1TB SSD: Creative work, large project files, or if you keep lots locally.
  • 2TB+ / NAS: Video, big media libraries and archives — pair a fast SSD with bulk storage.

Upgrade instead of replace

Many laptops and most desktops allow RAM and SSD upgrades. Adding RAM (e.g. Kingston FURY / ValueRAM) and swapping to an NVMe SSD (WD, Kingston, Seagate) can make a 3-year-old machine feel new — at a fraction of replacement cost.
