Software & ease of use
Synology's DSM operating system is widely considered the most polished and beginner-friendly, with strong apps for backup, file sync and surveillance. QNAP's QTS is more feature-dense and flexible, exposing more advanced options — great for power users and IT teams.
Performance & hardware
QNAP often ships more hardware for the money — faster CPUs, 2.5GbE networking and M.2 NVMe cache slots at lower price points (e.g. the QNAP TS-464). Synology focuses on reliability and a tightly integrated ecosystem (e.g. the DS923+ and DS224+).
Backup & data protection
- Both support RAID, snapshots and off-site backup.
- Synology Active Backup for Business is superb for backing up PCs, servers and virtual machines at no extra licence cost.
- QNAP Hybrid Backup Sync is equally capable and flexible.
Which should you buy?
- Choose Synology if you want the simplest experience and best-in-class backup software.
- Choose QNAP if you want more raw performance and hardware features for the price.
